There are so many kittens at Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue that they have announced an intake freeze until space frees up.

Adoption coordinator and foster parent Sandra Watson says they have 39 nursing kittens in rescue, along with 6 nursing moms.

“The nursing moms and kittens are in little clusters in their homes, but once the kittens are eight weeks of age, the moms need to be separated from them so they can dry up their milk and then be spayed and rehomed,” Watson says. “At that point we need fosters for the moms, and we also like to give our current fosters a break.”

All these kittens and moms are with eight fosters right now and their homes are busy.

Watson says there is also an increasing need for donations.

“We will be really hoping to get donations of kitten food, both canned and hard,” she says. “And it's always good to have on hand some kitten formula in case we get the emergency intake of orphaned kittens.”

Sometimes, a nursing mom at the rescue will adopt orphaned kittens, but that does not always happen.

With so many kittens right now, the rescue is putting out an urgent call for fosters.

Watson believes they continue to get busier as more people are aware of the rescue and reach out for help when they find an animal who needs the support of the rescue.

On May 8th, the rescue announced an intake freeze.

“We are now on an intake freeze due to the large numbers of strays currently in care. Kitten season has barely begun and we already have dozens of babies and mamas who will need adopting this summer.

Please consider donating this Mother's Day, to help out with the enormous cost of feeding and vetting so many unwanted cats. It would make a wonderful gift or memorial tribute.
