Dr. Ruurd Zijlstra discussed how field peas could be utilized in a ration. He feels the crop has potential, specifically for hogs at the grower/finisher stage. Zijlstra adds something pointed out to him all the time by the feed industry is the amount of dockage in the crop. He stresses producers do an excellent job of reducing foreign material down to 1% or 2%, but by the time it gets to the mill in many cases the percentage is much higher. Zijlstra adds another challenge some producers may face is securing a supply on a week to week basis. He's comfortable with inclusion rates for grower/finisher pigs of 25% to 30%, but is aware of people in the industry who go higher than that.
