Access to drugs has become much easier over the years.

A study released in 2018 shows that 25 percent of the Canadian population has tried cannabis by age 18.

With drugs being more commonly used by minors, the need for drug safety education has increased.

The Drug Safety Initiative is just one of many projects Lions Club manages.

Steinbach and Area Lions Club Project Manager, Hank Klassen, says it is extremely important to teach children about drugs.

“If you teach them while they're young, they're very open to listening.”

Each year, Lions Club goes to different schools and hands out booklets from Community Safety Net.

The booklets have information on drug safety, peer pressure, bullying, and how kids can stay safe in various situations.

Around 450 grade 5 students in the southeast received booklets this year.

Teachers often read through these books with the class, and the kids are always encouraged to take the booklets home and talk with their parents.

Klassen says there is useful information in the booklets for everyone.

“It's for students, parents, babysitters, and teachers.”
