Thousands and thousands of volunteer hours are being contributed in Steinbach this week as the city hosts the Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games. One of those volunteers is Steve Fehr, mayor of the male athletes' village at Steinbach Regional Secondary School. He says it's a big task and includes scrubbing toilets and taking out the trash.

"When you think of the term mayor, maybe you think glamorous things but we all had to get our hands dirty this week. But the volunteers have been awesome. We were a bit short on volunteers so a lot of us have had to do double duty and triple duty to make sure the athletes have a great time. But this is one of those things where we're not doing it for a paycheque, we're not doing it for ourselves, we're doing it to make sure that athletes, coaches and fans can have a great experience in Steinbach and showcase our city in the best way we can."

Fehr notes the first phase athletes were very well behaved with only a few of the boys being a little too rambunctious for their own good. He adds it was nothing major but did require some extra cleaning by volunteers.

"That'll happen when you're dealing with 16 and under kids who want to have fun with their teammates. But we also have to lay down the law sometimes with these guys."

Fehr says volunteers have been getting a lot of thank-you's from players and coaches for the work they are doing to make the games a great experience. And he adds they are also impressed by facilities at SRSS.

"I've spoken to a few athletes and they had no idea it would be this awesome. They're just blown away by the fact there's always food they can eat, there are places they can hang out and there's free wifi. You should have seen some of the kids when they walked into SRSS for the first time. They were like, wow, this place is unbelievable. That was really cool to see. So I think Steinbach has done a really good job putting on a really great show."
