A young man from Mitchell had a special Halloween scare Thursday evening when his car started on fire while he was still inside.

Pierce Barlow said the incident all started with an innocent craving for a late-night snack.

“I went out of the house wanting to get pumpkin pie and when I turned my key over, I heard a pop and my car started on fire,” laughs Barlow, “I was like ‘oh shoot I have to get out of here!’”

Barlow, full of adrenaline, quickly exited his vehicle.

Soon afterward, the Kleefeld Fire Department was called to the scene. Assistant Chief Armin Dueck says the first of his crew members arrived on scene just before 8 PM.

“Two of our firefighters got here early and used the house’s garden hose to put the fire out,” states Dueck, “it was pretty simple.”

For their efforts, the firefighters were treated to a generous helping of candy by a nearby homeowner.

Barlow too received some chocolate. As he ate it beside the burnt husk of his car he reflected on the evening's events. “It was my scariest Halloween yet,” he comments.
