Many memories will be made and legacies left behind after the 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games, which starts next week.

Director of Sport Jason Peters says the games will leave a legacy in the community through the track at Stonybrook Middle School, bleachers at the soccer park and thousands of dollars of track and sports equipment.

"Across the board, there's little things. There are televisions and video game systems that were purchased for the athlete entertainment that will have to stay in the community. None of this will go to individual people. As a host society we're going to disband in a few months and not exist anymore, so everything we've acquired will go back to the community in some way. We're expecting a great legacy."

He says a some of the bleachers may move to the football field at AD Penner Park to provide additional seating, while the rest will stay at the soccer park. Meanwhile, they're not sure where the sporting equipment, televisions and video game systems will end up, but they will stay within the community to be enjoyed by the community.

Peters notes their budget is $1-million and most of those funds have been spent locally. He says the summer games have many levels of opportunity.

"It is such a great thing for community unity [as well]. It's going to be something that this community hasn't ever seen before, we've never had anything of this magnitude or size in terms of how many people will converge on our community. At the end of the day, this is a lifetime legacy in terms of what these kids are going to learn, the experiences they're going to have and then it's all these local athletes that get to see this."

Peters adds one of the least talked about legacies is the connection made between different groups of people, when brought together for a common goal. Over the years, Peters says we may forget why the track is at the school or the bleachers are at the soccer park for spectators, but hopes they continue to be remembered as the time when Steinbach had the great opportunity to host the summer games.
