The roads in southeastern Manitoba have started to show signs of spring.

Randy Reimer, head of Steinbach's Public Works Department, says they have identified areas in the city that need repairs due to the freeze-thaw conditions and started repairing pot holes late last week with a winter-type cold mix asphalt.

Pothole at Reimer Avenue and First Street in Steinbach."Those patches can be done even if there's water sitting in the pothole; we can still put the material in there and push the water out," notes Reimer. "We have to bring it in and heat it up to get it somewhat pliable. Then once we have it pliable we can use it and it will harden up. It's a temporary repair until they can be patched permanently."

Kokomo Road south of Highway 52 about two-and-a-half miles was flooded out Monday morning. RM of La Broquerie Public Works supervisor, Ron Kowalchuk, says they were able to block the flow of water enough for local traffic to pass through. He adds they are hoping to build the road up with fresh gravel and re-open it in time for Tuesday morning traffic.

The Town of Mitchell also experienced signs of spring on Centre Street North when part of the road broke up due to frost heaves. Reimer adds city crews were also out clearing drains. "For the most part all of our drains are working, but there's still the odd one that we're having to take care of."
