Twelve days past the expected date of their second baby's arrival, a couple from Mitchell found themselves in labour and stranded on the side of a highway.

Shane and Darlene Wall were on their way to a hospital in Winnipeg around 5 am Monday, when their car collided with a large deer. Shane Wall says, “It was still a little dark, we didn't see it coming and we hit it full on going 100 km per hour.”

On Highway 59 and about ten minutes from the hospital, Wall says they were able to pull over. With his car not working and his wife in labour, he started to flag down passing vehicles. "A gentleman in a pickup truck was headed to the airport but decided he would first take us to the hospital.”

Wall says he got word on Friday, the vehicle will be written off. He notes, “I was pretty calm about the whole thing, I mean you just have to deal with the situation your given. You can't freak out because it wouldn't help any, and you still have to fix it. If this had been our first baby, it would have been a much bigger deal.”

Wall adds, they welcomed a healthy baby boy named Gunner Isaac into their family that day, and would like to send out a big thank you to the stranger that helped them make it to the hospital.
