The Chief Executive Officer for Steinbach Housing says tenants have been asking for it, and now they're getting it. David Driedger is responding to the patio being built at Fernwood Place.

The project has been made possible thanks in part to the help of Steinbach Community Foundation. The Foundation has handed a cheque for five thousand dollars to go towards the forty thousand dollar project.

Driedger notes the patio will be built in the green space off their multi purpose room. Once complete, it will sit approximately twenty feet by thirty feet and feature proper seating, planters and a pergola. The patio will be wheelchair accessible. Driedger hopes to have the work done by the end of June.

Steinbach Community Foundation is a charitable organization. Spokesperson Patti Fries says they receive funds from individuals and businesses and turn those investments into income earning funds, which can then be turned around to make improvements in the community.

Fries notes they have criteria they look at and one of those is whether or not the application will enhance health care services.

"This year the board was unanimous in selecting Fernwood," she says. "This project here is one of the projects that we are going to fund this year. So we think it's a great idea."

Fries says the five thousand dollars they are giving is about twenty-five per cent of the total amount issued by the Foundation in a given year.
