The Reeve of Hanover says reconstructing McKenzie Avenue, south of Mitchell will come in at least $141,000 over budget.

Earlier this week, Steinbachonline.com broke the story that while scraping down portions of McKenzie, the contractor found very poor sub soil. This meant more of the road needed to be shaved down, adding to the cost. Instead of $334,000, the project is now expected to cost at least $475,000.

Some have questioned whether this overage could have been avoided, had better testing been done prior to the project being tendered. Stan Toews says that's not so.

"I guess you could do test holes but how close do you have to put them," says Toews. "Some contractors also say you wouldn't necessarily find out exactly what's down there until you open it up."

According to Toews, the road should be passable to local traffic by the end of this week. The a-base lift will be applied next week as long as the conditions allow.

Meanwhile, Toews says there is concern from Council that other roads in the area might have similar problems.
