"The whole intersection is a revolving accident waiting to happen."

Those are the words of Morris MLA Shannon Martin referring to the intersection of Highway 59 and 311. Martin made the comment in response to Saturday evening's crash that sent three people to hospital with serious injuries.

"We're just fortunate that in this incident there was some Good Samaritans handy and they were able to prevent what could have been an absolute tragedy," he says. "Thank God for their involvement."

Martin says along with Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen, the two of them have communicated with the Department of Transportation in the past, asking for safety enhancements there.

"Not surprisingly it's not a priority for them," says Martin. "Unfortunately the NDP are far more involved and distracted by their own internal leadership squabbles than dealing with the priorities of Manitobans. This is just one of those."

Martin says there are significant permanent upgrades that can be done there such as adding turning lanes and widening the road to enhance safety. But in the short term, he suggests much larger stop signs could be erected, flashing lights could go up or even reducing the speed limit.

"Those options would be very short term options but they could be options that they could do by five o'clock today, I guarantee you," he says.

"If you look at the intersection as a whole, there's going to have to be some reconstruction done, that intersection is a poorly designed intersection," says Martin. "You're getting far more traffic on that section of road than it was originally designed for."

Martin suggests people contact Transportation Minister Ron Kostyshyn or Premier Greg Selinger to voice their concerns towards this intersection.

"If infrastructure is such a huge priority for them then this should be top of mind," he says. "It shouldn't take this kind of accident and this kind of potential tragedy to wake up a government to an intersection that has long been known by residents and by the department itself to be a safety hazard."
