Morris MLA Shannon Martin says the NDP Government has finally agreed to improve safety at the corner of Highway #59 and Provincial Road 311, just east of Niverville. Martin says he questioned the Minister of Transportation on the matter this week and was told that traffic signals will be installed this summer. Martin adds that's a good start.

"Will this make a difference? Yes, absolutely, this will significantly improve the safety of that intersection. That being said, it's unfortunate though, when I asked the Minister whether or not there's going to be any additional safety improvements to this intersection and this stretch of highway, the answer was no."

But Martin adds, in the longer term, the province needs to consider other upgrades.

"The installation of a lighted intersection with traffic signals is simply just a short term fix. We need to think longer term, in terms of, not only just safety, but the safe flow of goods and people. I mean, we need to look at twinning that section of #59, we need to look at improvements to the shoulders and potentially even look at overpasses or flyovers and that. The installation of lights will make immediate enhancements to the safety of the intersection but should only be considered a short term measure by this government."
