The topic of full-day, alternate day kindergarten classes for Steinbach schools has come up again in the Hanover School Division.

Superintendent Randy Dueck says it's a topic that is thought about each year. Dueck notes a survey was done in Steinbach a couple years ago and the vote was split 50-50, so the board of trustees, at the time, decided to leave the program as it was with students attending school half-days, every day.

Dueck says a few years ago Niverville Elementary School and South Oaks School in Grunthal changed from half-day, every day to full-day, alternate days. He notes what started out as a pilot project has become a permanent program and is doing very well.

"We've asked both principals to give us an update on how that program is going. So, we did check and they felt very good about the way full-day, alternate day kindergarten is going in their communities. They feel it serves their communities well, it serves their kids well, and they've been able to make it work very well in their schools."

The survey for Steinbach is projected to take place in February 2017.
