Garbage collection in the community of Mitchell is taking on a new look.

Luc Lahaie, Chief Administrative Officer for the RM of Hanover says two thousand garbage totes have been purchased by the municipality. This is all part of a pilot project that will now see residents roll totes to the curb instead of dropping their bags there.

Lahaie says unfortunately the municipality had to store the totes outdoors for the last couple of weeks. In that time, we received some snow and rain and that has resulted in the lids not closing properly. Lahaie says if homeowners bring the totes into a warm garage, the ice should melt and then after drying the lids they should fit properly again.

The pilot project is officially only starting in January, but Pac Man has stated it will collect garbage from these totes as early as Wednesday, December 2nd. If Mitchell proves to be a success, Lahaie says the communities of Kleefeld, Grunthal, New Bothwell and Blumenort will come on board as early as 2017. For now these are only for garbage collection. Lahaie says they are hoping in the next couple of years to provide a second tote to be used for recycling.

According to Lahaie, this change will impact the amount of garbage that residents can bring to the road. Prior to now, there has not been a limit to the amount of bags that residents in Hanover can bring to the curb. Once these totes are introduced, residents will not be able to drop off bags beside them. Lahaie says only what can fit in the 96 gallon tote will be collected. He notes if a family feels it has more garbage, it can contact the RM office and purchase a second one.

Lahaie says a brochure has been included with each bin, stating how to correctly use them.

With the bins costing between $80 - $100 each and a new contract being signed with the service provider, Lahaie says Mitchell residents should see their garbage rates go up.
