The Manitoba Junior Baseball League All-Stars came up just short of a medal in Regina.

The MJBL fell to Quebec 3-2 in the semifinal Sunday morning before a 10-0 loss to Ontario in the bronze medal game on Sunday afternoon.

All-Stars manager, Dan Giesbrecht explained they came within 2 outs of playing for gold

."We had some strong pitching, good defense, we scored early to put some pressure on them and had some outstanding pitching from Nik Kauenhofen. He threw a lot of offspeed stuff and Quebec really struggled to hit that.  We had them under control and we were totally in control throughout the game except for the bottom of the 7th inning. We got an out, they got a hit and couple of walks and it ended up in their favor. We were really proud of the guys for how they came on."

The MJBL had a slow start to the tournament dropping their Nationals opener 18-1 to the host Regina club.  On Friday the All-Stars fell to the eventual champion Quebec representatives 8-1 before a 7-6 victory on Saturday against Nova Scotia in the team's final round robin game.

"We treated it as a must win as coaches," stated Giesbrecht . "We had our best nine out there and they were solid.  We were firing on all cylinders and put pressure on them early.  Them may have been looking beyond us perhaps. Having been beaten soundly by other teams, I think they could be looking at us as a team that was really struggling and in disarray."

With a 1-2 record the MJBL qualified for the playoff round with a spot in the semifinal against the number 2 seed team in the other pool.

The All-Stars were able to keep their momentum going and advance to the semifinals with a 5-1 win over New Brunswick.

"There is always pressure at the National level to represent you province well," shared Giesbrecht. "The last thing the guys wanted to do was go home after one win.  Having gotten that first win and still looking at the chances of getting into the medal round took a lot of weight off the coaches and the players.  You could see new enthusiasm and confidence developing.  They walked into that game definitely feeling they could beat the second best club on the other side and that's what we did."

Giesbrecht added despite having only four days to come together as a team to compete in a National competition, the teams success was quite an accomplishment.

Meanwhile, the host Regina club fell to Quebec 7-4 in the gold medal game.
