The Carillon Sultans defeated the Winnipeg South Chiefs 5-1 in a game that was called with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday night at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach.

And the game wasn't called because of bad weather - just a lack of players.

Sultans shortstop Nik Kauenhofen bolted for second base just as Chiefs pitcher Eric Swanson threw to first.

Kauenofen was called safe at second and then safe a second time when he slid off the bag.

Swanson disagreed with the call and after a warning from the base umpire - continued his commentary and was promptly thrown out the game.

That left the Chiefs with only eight players.

Game over and the Sultans, who lost 2-0 and 2-1 to the St. Boniface Legionaires this past Sunday, were back in the win column and a step closer to the .500 mark.

That victory improved Carillon's record to 8-9.

"It felt good," said Kauenhofen. "We know we can compete with all the teams in the league and it's good to show some other teams what we've got here and play our best baseball."

Noah Vogt got the win as he allowed just two hits in his five innings of work.

"I felt good," Vogt said. "We've played this team before. We've seen their guys. We know what they can do. They're a good team but we're a good team as well so we just had to come out here and play our game."

Sultans catcher Nick Grenier, who scored a pair of runs, had the best view of Vogt's outstanding performance.

"He really stepped it up tonight," said Grenier. "He threw a lot of strikes which is a huge difference in what he'd done in the past. Today was really good. He had his curveball going. His changeup was really good and that's kind of how he dominated the game."

Carillon first baseman Tyson Smith contributed three hits.

Grenier, Kauenhofen, Justin Tremblay and Jared Esau will represent the Carillon at the Manitoba Junior Baseball League All-Star Game this Saturday at 5 p.m. at Shaw Park in Winnipeg.

The all-stars from the four rural teams (Sultans, Altona Bisons, Brandon Marlins & Pembina Valley Orioles) will play the all-stars from the four city teams (Elmwood Giants, St. James A's, St. Boniface Legionaires and Winnipeg South Chiefs).
