Sunflower growers are being told to check their emerging crop for wire worm.  Keystone Grain Purchasing Manager Grant Fehr says the insect has been found in a couple of fields in the Morden and Plum Coulee areas.  Fehr is also warning growers to be looking for cutworms as well, especially if your sunnies were planted in a rotation with edible beans or peas.  He also says while scouting later in the season, be on the look out for sunflower larvae.  He suggests 8 to 10 larvae per plant is the threshold, with 20% defoliation as the trigger for a treatment.
