A man from Steinbach was celebrating in Fiji this week when that country won its first ever Olympic medal. Fiji won a gold medal in men's rugby seven after defeating Great Britain 43-7.

Isi Masi is there doing relief work from the cyclone that hit that country earlier this year. The former Fijian says it was a crazy scene after that win, with people banging cooking pots, setting off fire crackers and dancing in the streets.

"People are just very happy," he says.

Once the game ended, players stood arm in arm, with tears in their eyes, singing hymns. Masi says they sang words of praise, thanking God for the victory.

And when it came time to accept their gold medals, players got down on their knees as the Princess placed the hardware around their necks.

"It was also showing respect to the Princess," explains Masi. "Any sort of dignitary as a Fijian you always go on your knees to receive something."

With everything that has happened in Fiji this year, Masi says this Olympic win will help. He adds players will see this as a way of giving reason to celebrate, during a time of recovery.
