RCMP say no charges were laid in the incident that led to three schools being placed in a Hold and Secure on Wednesday in Steinbach.

At 10:58 am, Hanover School Division announced that out of an abundance of caution, Steinbach Regional Secondary School had been placed in a Hold and Secure. RCMP were at the school as officers worked as quickly as possible to confirm details of the situation.

Then, at 11:10 am, the division announced that two additional schools, located nearby, had also been placed in Hold and Secure. Those two schools were Southwood School and Stonybrook Middle School.

RCMP assured residents that there was no threat to individuals, neither staff nor students at these schools, or the general public.

Then, at 12:10 pm on Wednesday, the division announced that the Hold and Secure had been lifted at all three schools. RCMP cleared the scenes and classes resumed as scheduled.

Later in the day, the division explained that the Hold and Secure resulted from the RCMP being made aware of a known individual who was allegedly in possession of a weapon. The division says no direct threat was made to any of their schools. The Hold and Secure was put in place out of an abundance of caution, which then limited entry and exit to the buildings.

On Thursday morning, RCMP indicated that the youth was located Wednesday night, and that the firearm was confirmed to be a BB gun. No charges were laid.
