The Providence Pilots soccer teams each lost their final home matches of the 2016 season.

The top ranked Red River College Rebels women's team beat the Pilots 7-3 with Courtney Engel scoring twice and Julika Kehler once for the hosts. On the men's side, first-place Red River won 5-1. Braxton Phommarath tallied the lone goal for Providence.

"Both teams were fighting injuries that hurt us last weekend," says women's head coach Tory Walker. "And while both showed some fight until the end, we were facing strong Red River squads that had us on our heels."

The Pilots women currently hold down the fourth and final Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) play-off spot and will travel to Brandon University (BU) and Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) in their final matches of the season. In fifth place, the men are a point back of Brandon and a semi-final berth and will also face BU and CMU on Saturday and Sunday.

In volleyball, the reigning MCAC champion Providence women tasted defeat for the first time this season. At last weekend's Lake Region Slamfest in Devils Lake, North Dakota, they beat Lake Region State College 3-1 and Dakota College at Bottineau 3-0 and lost to North Dakota State College of Science 3-0 and to Bismark State College 3-1.

"This is the second time we've gone to Lake Region Slamfest and both years have provided us with some of the most physical volleyball we've played," says Head Coach Kyle Guenther. "We can take a lot of positive away from these matches, and these good teams showed us some specific things we can work on going forward."

Shayna Staerk led the way over the weekend with 49 kills and 39 digs while Sara Barker contributed 39 kills and eight blocks.

Finally, the Pilots basketball season will tip off Friday with both Providence teams going up against CMU in Winnipeg before hosting Red River.
