The Steinbach Fire Department was able to extinguish a fire inside a home in Blumenort at shortly before 10 Thursday evening.

Steinbach Assistant Fire Chief Russ Reimer says the call was for smoke near a fireplace in a home on Parkview Bay. He notes upon arrival they were able to confirm that the heavy smoke was coming from a fire in the basement around the chimney.

"Guys got in there nice and quick and they had to tear things open around the fireplace area primarily in the basement, had to open up the ceiling and the fireplace and then also on the main floor because it had extended through. It was a little bit of a nasty fire for crawling around in the floor space and there was a significant amount of damage."

Reimer says the Steinbach Firefighters did a great job extinguishing the fire and limiting the damage. He notes the family was safely evacuated before the fire department arrived and the Office of the Fire Commissioner has been called to investigate the cause of the fire.
