The RM of Hanover has shelved plans to repave Walnut Avenue in Mitchell this year. Deputy Reeve Bernie Stahn says council is being sensitive to a number of homeonwers along the street. They have objected to the fact they would be required to contribute a combined $35,000 towards the $50,000 project, through a frontage levy.

"Due to the concerns raised by the residents, we've decided to not proceed with the Bylaws for that project. We're going to re-visit that project, probably in 2017, and see if there's something that we need to change with our requests or our application, see if we can do something that meets all the needs of the residents on the street."

Stahn adds Walnut Avenue definitely needs to be repaved because the surface is in rough shape as it is now a bus route and there's been a fair bit of residential construction in recent years. With that project off the books this year, Stahn says council has decided to instead pave Centre Street North.

"We're paving Centre Street North past Stahn Field ball park. We're going to extend that. Right not it ends at the ball park driveways. We're going to extend that past the soccer field parking lot entrance and we're going to take it to the edge of the LUD (Local Urban District) north boundary."

Stahn notes council also plans to proceed with the paving of Oakview Avenue and Willow Street this year and will build a pathway from Norwood Bay to Mitchell Middle School to improve safety for children there.
