The school supplies drive at Staples in Steinbach is partnering with the Steinbach Family Resource Centre for the second year in a row; together they're impacting families in the southeast.

Centre Executive Director Vicki Olatundun says parents of underprivileged families were very grateful last year to have had the opportunity to provide new school supplies for their children.

"Some mom's cried. There was a mom who actually drove in and said, 'Vicki, I tried, but I've only got $30 left in my bank account. Can you help me?' Just to be able to put that parent's mind at ease was probably one of the best things that came out of this. I sort of said, 'Don't worry about it because Staples is a partner of ours.' Her kids went to school happy and, as a mom, she felt dignified. I was really happy about that."

Staples General Manager Gerald Jeske says their goal this year is to raise $6,000, an all-time record for the Steinbach location.

"Every single dollar of that donation goes towards kids who can't afford school supplies in our area. That's what I like about this cause more than any other event that Staples does because it stays local and, as a store, we can choose a local partner."

Olatundun adds, last year they were able to help 150 kids including children of families who lost their homes to fire during the school year.
