Steinbach's Fire Chief has assured the public that should an emergency happen at the Steinbach arena, their fire trucks will still be able to get there.

Kel Toews is responding to street construction along Elmdale which will prevent players and fans from driving up to the arena at the start of the season. Toews notes they have taken a look and though inconvenient, the streets under construction are not impassable by their trucks and by moving the road blocks they would be able to access all parts of the arena.

Russ Dyck with Steinbach Parks and Recreation says EMS is also aware of the situation and there are still a couple of access points for them to get into the building.

Meanwhile, Toews says anytime you have a summer like this one when there is so much street construction going on in the city, it takes some pre-planning on the part of the fire department.

"Especially Main Street," says Toews. "If we have to cross Main Street we have to keep in mind which intersections are blocked and which ones we can cross over."

Toews credits city staff, as well as staff at the RM of Hanover for keeping him up to date anytime a street is shut down. Once he receives the notification he texts it to his crew and they go over it again at drill night.

"It's a bit of an inconvenience but it's not a big deal," says Toews. "It changes the way we do our work, but it doesn't prevent us from doing it."
