Barn Fire along Hwy 311

A barn near Niverville was destroyed by fire Tuedsay night. The blaze occurred at a farm along Provincial Road 311, a quarter mile east of Highway #59. Niverville Fire Chief Keith Bueckert says they got the call around 8:30 and never had a chance to save the barn.

"Upon arrival, we had a fully involved structure and we made this a completely defensive fire. We called in a couple of mutual aid departments (St. Pierre and Tache) to give us a hand with water and just protect it from some exposures and let the fire burn it down to a controllable manner."

Bueckert says there was no livestock in the barn and it was apparently being used for storage. He adds the cause had not yet been determined as of late Tuesday night.

"We won't have a cause at this time as we are waiting for a backhoe to properly extinguish it. We have a lot of bale material in there and we need to bring in a back hoe to actually get to the seat of the fire."

There were no injuries. Bueckert notes a second barn at the farm caught fire but they were able to quickly extinguish it and save the structure.

"The shiplap roofing caught on fire and we had a heavy fire load of hay material that was in the second storey of that barn. We had a bit of fire in there as well but we managed to knock that down quite quickly."
