With Thanksgiving on Monday, it's time to think about getting the turkey, potatoes, and pumpkin pie, but it's also time to thank those who produce the food at our tables.

Farm Radio International (FRI) asks Canadians to call in and leave a Thanksgiving message for farmers, which will play on Canadian radio stations, as well as some in Africa.

"A couple of years ago during our family Thanksgiving, I thought, you know, we shouldn't forget the farmers who do the work and take the risks so we can eat," says Kevin Perkins, executive director of Farm Radio International. "It's the day we pause to appreciate and feel thankful for the harvest and the food we're enjoying."

Perkins says last year they received over 120 messages. To date, the annual Thank a Farmer campaign has raised more than $30,000, which goes toward assisting FRI's work in Africa.

"We work with about 600 different African radio stations across the continent and we help them in a variety of ways to produce educational radio shows for farmers and rural communities about a wide range of issues — agricultural advice, weather information, market information," he says. "We use the funds to help us develop special material for radio stations that they can use in their broadcast, and to help do special programs... on issues like providing farmers with weather services if they've never had weather advisory reports, for example."

While it's free for Canadians to call in and leave a message of thanks, Perkins says an anonymous donor will give $20 for each message they receive. Plus, each social media follow on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, or YouTube results in a donation of $1, and every donation to FRI during the campaign is matched 3-to-1.
